The Salvation Army of North Texas is teaming up with the Dallas Cowboys for the annual Inspiring Hope Luncheon at AT&T Stadium to help support the ongoing needs of those combatting poverty, addiction, and homelessness in Tarrant County.
As one of The Salvation Army of North Texas’ signature fundraising events, the Inspiring Hope Luncheon raises vital funds to support Corps Community Centers and programs in the area, such as the Family Life Center, J.E. & L.E. Mabee Social Service Center, and Northside Corps Community Center. It also benefits the Gene and Jerry Jones Family North Texas Youth Education Town (YET), which gives young people the tools they need to overcome adversity and achieve their full potential.
Everson Walls was born in Dallas, TX on December 28th, 1959.While growing up in an all Black suburb called Hamilton Park, he enjoyed playing all sports. Although his first love was basketball, after playing one year of football at Lloyd V. Berkner High School in Richardson, Texas, that became his ticket to a scholarship at Grambling State University, coached by the legendary Eddie Robinson. Under coach Robinson's tutelage, Everson matured into a premiere college defensive back. At 6'1", 190 lbs., Everson played numerous positions while at the university and finished up his senior year as an All-American, while leading the nation in interceptions in 1980, with 11. That didn't seem to be enough for NFL scouts, because he was passed up in the NFL draft, and had to sign a free agent contract with the Dallas Cowboys, coached by the great Tom Landry.
Everson made an immediate impact in the Cowboys secondary. In the first five years, he was the first player to lead the league in interceptions for three separate seasons, including a club-record 11 interceptions in his rookie year. Everson continued to playnine seasons with the Dallas Cowboys, before being signed tothe New York Giants in 1990, led by none other than Bill Parcells. It was a magical year for Walls and the Giants as he led NewYork's defense in interceptions with 6. That year for Everson was culminated by a touchdown-saving tackle on running back Thurman Thomas, that secured the 20-19 win against the Buffalo Bills in Superbowl XXV in 1991. Walls went on to play out his final years with the Cleveland Browns, coached by Bill Belichick.
While being mentored by some of the beat coaches in college and NFL history, Walls went on to accumulate many honors including: Four-Time Pro-Bowl Three-Time All-Pro currently tied for 13th on NFL's all-time interception list with 57 All-Time Black College Team 1980's All-Decade Team Dallas Cowboy's 25th Anniversary Team Cowboy's Man of the Year 1987.
