The Salvation Army Provides Essential Relief from Cold Weather to North Texans

Jan 6, 2025 | by The Salvation Army

With the weather forecast showing temperatures quickly dropping in the coming days across North Texas, The Salvation Army has launched its holistic inclement weather services to help our most vulnerable neighbors stay safe and warm.

The following locations are currently open as overnight warming shelters:

Dallas County

  • The Carr P. Collins Social Service Center (5302 Harry Hines Blvd)

  • The Garland Corps Community Center (451 West Avenue D)

Denton County

  • The Denton Corps Community Center (1508 E. McKinney St)

  • The Lewisville Corps Community Center (880 Fox Ave)

Tarrant County

  • The Arlington Corps Community Center (712 W. Abram St)

  • The Mabee Social Service Center (1855 E. Lancaster Ave)

Collin County

  • The McKinney Corps Community Center (600 Wilson Creek Pkwy)

While each shelter follows guidelines by the city and the county, exact protocols may vary depending on location. North Texas Area Command has established a threshold for activating overnight warming shelters, which relies on a forecast of 36 degrees or below, usually for more than two consecutive days.

The Salvation Army’s overnight warming shelters offer refuge from the cold, warm food and drink, emotional and spiritual care, clean-up kits, and assistance to individuals and families seeking comprehensive care. The Salvation Army is also deploying rapid response units to bring relief directly to vulnerable populations.

The threat of cold weather-related illnesses is a stark reality in the community, particularly for at-risk groups such as seniors, young children, individuals with chronic diseases, and those experiencing homelessness and poverty.

“We’re aware of the potentially catastrophic cold temperatures headed towards North Texas as it relates to our most vulnerable neighbors in need,” said Major Paul McFarland, area commander of The Salvation Army of North Texas. “Because The Salvation Army is embedded in the communities where it serves, we can respond immediately when a disaster strikes or weather suddenly turns. Support during the winter months goes beyond providing temporary assistance — The Salvation Army will continue to help break the cycles of poverty, addiction, and homelessness at its warming shelters and all year long.”

As the largest social services provider in North Texas, The Salvation Army provides year-round support to all those facing poverty, addiction, and homelessness across Dallas, Rockwall, Tarrant, Ellis, Denton, and Collin counties. Its four shelters, two senior living facilities, and two in-shelter addiction recovery centers are housing 1,300 people per night, 12 food pantries are feeding 10,000 people per week, and three recovery programs are treating 500 people per week.
